We must check if our sources are trustworthy. A primary source is an eyewitness, like a diary from the past. A secondary source is written later, like a school textbook. Both are useful, but we must make sure the author is an expert.
Imagine you are writing a report on the first moon landing. You need to choose the most trustworthy source. Let us look at two choices and decide which one is better.
- Step 1: Look at Source A. It is a blog post written last week by a kid who likes space. This is a secondary source, but the author is not an expert.
- Step 2: Look at Source B. It is an audio interview from 1969 with Neil Armstrong, the astronaut who walked on the moon. This is a primary source.
- Step 3: Compare their credibility. Neil Armstrong was actually there, so his words are highly trustworthy and accurate.
- Step 4: Choose the best source. Source B is the winner because it is a highly credible primary source!
