Sam has a test question: 'A box holds 8 crayons. Lily buys 3 boxes. How many crayons does she have?' Walk through the test-taking steps to solve this.
- Analyze: Find the clues. We have 3 boxes. Each box has 8 crayons. We need to find the total crayons.
- Plan: Choose a strategy. Since we have equal groups, we can use multiplication. Our plan is 3 times 8.
- Solve: Do the math. 3 times 8 equals 24. Our starting answer is 24 crayons.
- Justify: Explain why it works. 3 groups of 8 is the same as 8 plus 8 plus 8, which is 24.
- Evaluate: Check if it is reasonable. 24 is larger than 8, which makes sense because she bought multiple boxes.
