Critical thinking & problem-solving

Grade 6 · Study & Life Skills · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we will learn a super cool way to solve any big problem!

When you face a hard problem, do not panic! We use a special five-step model to find the best answer. First, we analyze the facts we already know.

question mark

Next, we make a plan. Think of a plan as a map that shows you how to get to your final goal.

Start Goal

After finding a solution, we must justify it. This means we explain why our answer makes complete sense. Finally, we check our work to make sure it is reasonable.

Does it balance out? Check your work!
✏️ Worked example

Sam has 3 bags of apples. Each bag has 4 red apples. He buys 2 more green apples. How many apples does he have in total? Use our problem-solving model to solve this.

  1. 1. Analyze: We know Sam has 3 bags with 4 red apples each. He also has 2 green apples. We need to find the total number of apples.
  2. 2. Plan: First, multiply the bags of red apples (3 times 4). Then, add the green apples (+ 2).
  3. 3. Solve: 3 times 4 is 12. Next, 12 plus 2 is 14 apples.
  4. 4. Justify: The answer is 14. We can show this by counting: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 red apples, and 2 more makes 13, 14.
  5. 5. Evaluate: Is 14 reasonable? Yes, because 14 is slightly larger than 12, which makes sense since we added 2 more.
