1. Analyze: We know Sam has 3 bags with 4 red apples each. He also has 2 green apples. We need to find the total number of apples.
2. Plan: First, multiply the bags of red apples (3 times 4). Then, add the green apples (+ 2).
3. Solve: 3 times 4 is 12. Next, 12 plus 2 is 14 apples.
4. Justify: The answer is 14. We can show this by counting: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 red apples, and 2 more makes 13, 14.
5. Evaluate: Is 14 reasonable? Yes, because 14 is slightly larger than 12, which makes sense since we added 2 more.
