Sam is taking a math test. A question asks: 'A box holds 12 markers. If Mia buys 3 boxes, how many markers does she have?' Walk through the five-step model to solve this and check the answer.
Analyze: We look at the given facts. We know one box has 12 markers. We know Mia buys 3 boxes. We need to find the total markers.
Plan: Since we have equal groups, we can multiply the number of markers in one box by the number of boxes: 12 times 3.
Solve: We multiply 12 by 3 to get 36 markers.
Justify: We prove our answer by using addition instead. 12 + 12 + 12 = 36. The math matches up perfectly!
Evaluate: We check if 36 is reasonable. Since 3 boxes must have more than 12 markers, and 36 is a sensible total, our solution is correct.
