Days, dates & time

Grade 4 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly tutor. Today we will learn how to say the days of the week in Mandarin Chinese!

In English, every day of the week has a totally different name. In Mandarin Chinese, it is much simpler! We use the word 'xingqi' which means 'week', and then we just add a number.

To say Monday, we start with the word for week, 'xingqi'. Then we add the number one, which is 'yi'. So, Monday is 'xingqi yi'!

xingqi (week) + yi (one) = xingqi yi (Monday)

We keep counting up for the other days! Tuesday is week plus two, which is 'xingqi er'. Wednesday is week plus three, which is 'xingqi san'. This pattern goes all the way up to Saturday, which is 'xingqi liu'!

Tuesday = xingqi er 二 (2) Wednesday = xingqi san 三 (3) Thursday = xingqi si 四 (4)
✏️ Worked example

Imagine your friend invites you to play soccer on Friday. How would you say 'Friday' in Mandarin Chinese by using our counting pattern?

  1. First, remember the main word for 'week' which is 'xingqi'.
  2. Next, count the days of the week on your fingers to find Friday's number. Monday is 1, Tuesday is 2, Wednesday is 3, Thursday is 4, and Friday is 5.
  3. Now, think of the Mandarin Chinese word for the number five, which is 'wu'.
  4. Put the two parts together: start with 'xingqi' and add 'wu' at the end.
  5. The result is 'xingqi wu'! That is how you say Friday.
