Days, dates & time

Grade 5 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly tutor. Today, we will learn how to say days of the week in Mandarin Chinese!

In Mandarin, naming the days of the week is super easy. It is just like counting! We use the word 'Xīngqī', which means 'week', and then we add a number.

Monday is the first day of the week. So, we say 'Xīngqī yī', which means 'Week One'. Tuesday is 'Xīngqī èr', or 'Week Two'!

We keep counting all the way to Saturday, which is 'Xīngqī liù' (Week Six). But Sunday is special! Instead of a number, we say 'Xīngqī tiān', which means 'Week Day of Heaven'.

Sunday = Xīngqī tiān(Day of Heaven/Sun)
✏️ Worked example

Let us find out how to say 'Thursday' in Mandarin Chinese by using our counting steps.

  1. First, remember that the word for 'week' in Mandarin is 'Xīngqī'. We will write this down first.
  2. Next, think about what day of the week Thursday is. Monday is 1, Tuesday is 2, Wednesday is 3, and Thursday is 4.
  3. Now, find the Mandarin word for the number 4. The Chinese number word for 4 is 'sì'.
  4. Finally, put the word for 'week' and the number 4 together. 'Xīngqī' + 'sì' becomes 'Xīngqī sì'!
  5. Great job! You just translated Thursday into 'Xīngqī sì' all by yourself!
