Family members (Jiārén)

Grade 5 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi! I am Studyfin, your friendly Chinese tutor. Today we will learn how to talk about our family members in Mandarin Chinese!

In Chinese, the word for family is 'jiārén'. The first part, 'jiā', means home. The second part, 'rén', means person. So, your family members are the 'home people' who live with you and love you!

Let's learn the word for dad: 'bàba'. Notice how we say the same sound twice! The first 'bà' is strong, and the second 'ba' is soft. This makes the word sound bouncy and fun to say.

爸爸bàba (Dad)

Now, let's learn the word for mom: 'māma'. Just like dad, we repeat the sound! The first 'mā' is a high, flat tone, and the second 'ma' is short and light. Let's practice saying both together!

妈妈māma (Mom)
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to introduce your mom to a friend. You want to point to her and say 'This is my mom' in Chinese. How do we build this sentence step by step?

  1. First, find the word for 'this'. In Chinese, we say 'zhè'.
  2. Next, find the word for 'is'. In Chinese, 'is' is 'shì'. Put them together to get 'zhè shì' (this is).
  3. Then, find the word for 'my' or 'mine'. We say 'wǒ de'. 'Wǒ' means me, and 'de' shows ownership.
  4. Now, add the word we just learned for mom, which is 'māma'.
  5. Put all the pieces in order: 'Zhè shì wǒ de māma.' You just said 'This is my mom' in Chinese! Great job!
