Pinyin is a system that uses English letters to help us read Chinese words. It shows us how to pronounce the sounds. But in Chinese, just saying the letters is not enough. You also need to use the right tone!
There are four main tones in Mandarin Chinese. The first tone is high and flat, like singing a steady note. The second tone rises up, like you are asking a question: 'Huh?'.
The third tone dips down and then goes back up, like a little rollercoaster. The fourth tone starts high and drops quickly, sounding sharp and angry, like saying 'No!'.
Let us practice with the sound 'ba'. We want to match each tone of 'ba' with its correct English meaning.
- Look at the tone mark on 'bā'. It has a flat line, which is the first tone. This high, flat sound means 'eight'.
- Look at the tone mark on 'bá'. The line rises up, which is the second tone. This rising sound means 'to pull up'.
- Look at the tone mark on 'bǎ'. It dips down and up, which is the third tone. This dipping sound means 'target'.
