Colors & shapes

Grade 6 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, your friendly Chinese guide. Today, we will learn how to describe colorful shapes in Mandarin!

In Chinese, we can name colors and shapes just like in English. First, let's learn how to say 'red' and 'circle'. The Chinese word for red is 'hóng sè' (红色), and the word for circle is 'yuán xíng' (圆形).

When we want to describe a shape with a color, we put the color first. We also add a small helper word, 'de' (的), in the middle. So, a red circle is 'hóng sè de yuán xíng' (红色 的 圆形).

Now, let's try a different color and shape! The word for blue is 'lán sè' (蓝色), and square is 'zhèng fāng xíng' (正方形). To say 'blue square', we combine them using our helper word 'de' (的) to get 'lán sè de zhèng fāng xíng' (蓝色 的 正方形).

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you see a yellow triangle. In Mandarin, yellow is 'huáng sè' (黄色) and triangle is 'sān jiǎo xíng' (三角形). How do you write 'yellow triangle' in Chinese?

  1. Step 1: Identify the color word. The Chinese word for yellow is 'huáng sè' (黄色).
  2. Step 2: Identify the shape word. The Chinese word for triangle is 'sān jiǎo xíng' (三角形).
  3. Step 3: Remember the rule. We put the color word first, then the helper word 'de' (的), and finally the shape word.
  4. Step 4: Combine them together. This gives us 'huáng sè' + 'de' + 'sān jiǎo xíng'.
  5. Step 5: Write the final phrase: 'huáng sè de sān jiǎo xíng' (黄色的三角形).
