Food & drink (Shíwù)

Grade 6 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi there! Today we will learn how to talk about yummy food and drinks in Mandarin Chinese. It is super easy and fun!

In Mandarin, we use the word 'chī' (吃) to say 'to eat'. We use 'hē' (喝) to say 'to drink'. Just put these action words right before the food or drink!

Let's learn our first food word! Apple is 'píngguǒ' (苹果). To say 'eat an apple', we put the action word first to make 'chī píngguǒ'.

chī píngguǒ (吃苹果) = Eat Apple

Now let's look at a drink! Water is 'shuǐ' (水). To say 'drink water', we combine our action word for drinking to make 'hē shuǐ'.

hē shuǐ (喝水) = Drink Water

Let's compare them! To choose the right word, ask yourself: Do I chew it or gulp it? If you chew it, use 'chī'. If you gulp it, use 'hē'.

✏️ Worked example

Your friend hands you a glass of milk, which is 'niúnǎi' (牛奶) in Mandarin. How do you say 'drink milk' in Mandarin?

  1. First, decide if milk is something you eat or drink. Since milk is a liquid, you gulp it. That means we need the action word for 'to drink'.
  2. Next, recall the Mandarin word for 'to drink'. That word is 'hē' (喝).
  3. Then, look at the word for milk, which is 'niúnǎi' (牛奶).
  4. Finally, put the action word 'hē' right before the drink 'niúnǎi'. This gives us 'hē niúnǎi' (喝牛奶)!
