Ni hao! Welcome to your first step in learning Mandarin Chinese. Today, we will learn how to say hello and introduce ourselves to new friends.
In Chinese, the most common way to say hello is 'Nǐ hǎo'. This greeting is made of two smaller words: 'nǐ' which means 'you', and 'hǎo' which means 'good'. So, when you say hello, you are literally wishing someone 'you good'!
Mandarin Chinese uses special tones that make the language sound like a song. The tone marks on 'nǐ' and 'hǎo' both dip down and then go up. But when we say them together, the first word 'nǐ' automatically changes to a rising tone so it is easier to say!
To introduce yourself, you can say 'Wǒ jiào' followed by your name. 'Wǒ' means 'I' or 'me', and 'jiào' means 'to be called'. Let's see how a conversation flows back and forth when two people meet for the first time.
Imagine you are meeting a new classmate named Ming. How would you greet them in Chinese and tell them your name is Alex, step by step?
- First, start with the friendly greeting 'hello'. You write this in pinyin as 'Nǐ hǎo'.
- Next, prepare to say your name. You need the words for 'I am called', which is 'Wǒ jiào'.
- Then, say your own name right after those words. This gives you 'Wǒ jiào Alex'.
- Finally, put both sentences together to make a complete introduction: 'Nǐ hǎo! Wǒ jiào Alex.'
