Chinese characters, or Hànzì, are not made of letters. Instead, they are made of beautiful lines called strokes.
The first rule of writing Chinese characters is to write from left to right. This keeps your writing neat and easy to read.
The second rule is to write from top to bottom. Writing the top parts first makes sure you do not run out of room at the bottom.
Let us look at a real character! The word for 'two' is written with two flat lines. We combine our rules to write the top line first, then the bottom line.
Use your rules to write the character for 'three' (三). It has three flat lines: a top line, a middle line, and a bottom line.
- Look at the three lines and remember our rules. We must write from top to bottom.
- Start with the top line. Draw a medium-length line from left to right.
- Move down to the middle line. Draw a shorter line from left to right, right below the first one.
- Move down to the last line. Draw the longest line from left to right at the bottom.
- Check your work! You wrote 'three' (三) by going top-to-bottom and left-to-right.
