Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Today we will learn how to say common actions in Mandarin Chinese!
Verbs are action words. In Mandarin, we use simple words for things we do every day. Let's look at three basic actions: to eat, to drink, and to read.

The word for 'to eat' is 'chī' (吃). The word for 'to drink' is 'hē' (喝). Notice how both of these words start with a square shape on the left. This square represents a mouth!
The word for 'to read' or 'to study' is 'dú' (读) or 'kàn shū' (看书), which literally means 'look at books'. To make a sentence, you just put the person first, then the verb, and then the object. For example, 'I eat apples' is 'Wǒ chī píngguǒ'.
Let's translate the English sentence 'I drink water' into Mandarin Chinese step-by-step. The Mandarin word for 'I' is 'Wǒ', 'to drink' is 'hē', and 'water' is 'shuǐ'.
- Identify the subject of the sentence, which is 'I'. In Mandarin, this is 'Wǒ'.
- Identify the action verb, which is 'drink'. In Mandarin, this is 'hē'.
- Identify the object being acted upon, which is 'water'. In Mandarin, this is 'shuǐ'.
- Put the words in the correct Mandarin sentence order: Subject + Verb + Object.
- Combine the words in order: 'Wǒ' + 'hē' + 'shuǐ' to get 'Wǒ hē shuǐ'!
