In Mandarin, naming the days of the week is like counting. We start with the word 'Xīngqī', which means 'week'. To say Monday, we just add the number one, 'yī', to get 'Xīngqī yī'.
The pattern continues all the way through Saturday. Tuesday is 'Xīngqī èr' (Week Two), and Wednesday is 'Xīngqī sān' (Week Three). Let's see how the days build up step-by-step using these numbers!
Sunday is the only exception to this number rule. Instead of a number, we use 'tiān' (which means sky or day) or 'rì' (which means sun). So, Sunday is 'Xīngqī tiān' or 'Xīngqī rì'.
Imagine your Chinese penpal asks you to meet online on Thursday. How would you write "Thursday" in Mandarin using the math pattern we just learned?
- Identify the base word for "week" in Mandarin, which is "Xīngqī".
