In Mandarin, the most common way to say hello is "Nǐ hǎo" (你好). This phrase is made of two separate words that join together to welcome someone.
Let us break down the two parts. "Nǐ" (你) means "you", and "hǎo" (好) means "good". When you put them together, you are literally wishing the other person well by saying "You good!"
Mandarin is a tonal language, which means the pitch of your voice changes the word's meaning. Both "nǐ" and "hǎo" use the third tone, which dips down and then goes up, like a little valley.
Here is an amazing rule: when two third tones are next to each other, the first one changes! Instead of dipping, "nǐ" changes to a rising tone (like asking a question), while "hǎo" stays a dipping tone. This makes it much smoother to say: "ní hǎo"!
