Writing characters (Hànzì) basics

Grade 7 · Mandarin Chinese · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Let's learn how to write beautiful Chinese characters together using simple rules!

Chinese characters are called Hànzì. Instead of using letters, they are built with different kinds of strokes.

numbers

The most basic rule is to write from top to bottom. This keeps your writing neat and balanced.

Rule: Top to Bottom1. Top Stroke2. Bottom Stroke

Another major rule is writing from left to right. We write the left side first before moving to the right.

Rule: Left to Right1. Left2. Right
✏️ Worked example

Let's analyze how to write the character for 'two' (二 - èr). It has two horizontal lines. Which line do we write first, and why?

  1. Look at the character: 二. It has one short line on top and one longer line on the bottom.
  2. Apply our rules: The 'top-to-bottom' rule says we must write the higher stroke first.
  3. Draw the shorter, top line from left to right.
  4. Move your pen down to the second, longer line.
  5. Draw the longer, bottom line from left to right to finish the character.
