Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Let's explore the Chinese Spring Festival, also known as Lunar New Year, and learn why it is so special!

The Spring Festival is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. It marks the start of a new year on the traditional lunar calendar, usually falling between late January and mid-February.

Red is the main color of the Spring Festival because it represents good luck, joy, and energy. Families hang red lanterns and paste red paper banners on their doors to welcome positive energy and scare away bad luck.

Food plays a huge role in the celebrations, especially dumplings. Because dumplings are shaped like ancient Chinese silver and gold ingots, eating them is believed to bring wealth and prosperity in the coming year.

✏️ Worked example

Analyze why a family would choose to eat fish and clean their house before the Spring Festival begins. Use cultural evidence to support your answer.

  1. Identify the cultural meaning of the word for fish. In Mandarin, the word for fish is 'yú', which sounds exactly like the word for surplus or extra.
  2. Connect the fish symbol to the goal of the festival. Eating fish represents the hope that the family will have more than enough money and food at the end of every year.
  3. Identify the cultural meaning of cleaning. Cleaning the house before the new year starts is done to sweep away any bad luck from the past year.
  4. Analyze the timing of the cleaning. You must not sweep on New Year's Day itself, or you might accidentally sweep away the fresh good luck that just arrived.
  5. Formulate the final conclusion. The family cleans to remove past bad luck and eats fish to welcome future abundance, showing how language and action combine to express hopes for a great year ahead.
