French-speaking cultures (la culture)

Grade 3 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! I am Studyfin, your friendly French tutor. Today we will explore how people live and speak French all around the world!

Did you know that French is spoken on five different continents? Millions of people use French every day. This big group of French-speaking places is called the Francophonie.

In France, people love to buy fresh bread from a bakery called a boulangerie. The most famous bread is the long, thin baguette. People often carry them home under their arm!

Une Baguette!

French is also spoken in Canada, especially in a province called Quebec. In the winter, Canadians love to pour sweet maple syrup on clean snow. They roll it up on a stick to make a yummy treat!

✏️ Worked example

Let us practice using what we learned about French-speaking cultures. Imagine you are visiting a friend in Quebec, Canada in January. What treat can you make together outside, and how do you make it?

  1. First, remember that Quebec has very snowy winters.
  2. Next, think of the sweet tree sap that Canada is famous for: maple syrup.
  3. Then, gather clean, fresh snow outside and boil some sweet maple syrup.
  4. After that, pour the hot, gold syrup right onto the cold snow in a line.
  5. Finally, use a small wooden stick to roll up the sticky syrup as it cools!
