Numbers (Les nombres)

Grade 3 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! Today we will learn how to count to five in French. It is fun and easy!

In French, every number has a special name. Let us start with the first three numbers. One is 'un', two is 'deux', and three is 'trois'.

Let us look at how we say them. We say 'un' like 'uh'. We say 'deux' like 'duh'. We say 'trois' like 'twah'.

Now we can learn four and five. Four is 'quatre' and five is 'cinq'. We say 'quatre' like 'kat-ruh'. We say 'cinq' like 'sank'.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you see three blue birds sitting on a fence. How do you count them in French?

  1. First, look at the very first bird. We count this one as 'un'.
  2. Next, look at the second bird. Now we say 'deux'.
  3. Then, look at the third bird. We say 'trois'.
  4. Great job! You counted all three birds. In French, we have 'trois' birds.
