The French alphabet uses the exact same 26 letters as English. However, many of these letters sound different when we say them out loud.
Let's look at the letter 'A'. In French, we pronounce it like the 'ah' sound in the word 'father'.
Now let's try the letter 'H'. In French, it is called 'Ache'. It sounds like the English word 'ash' but with a soft 'sh' sound at the end.

How do you spell and pronounce the French word 'AMI' (which means friend) using the French alphabet sounds?
- Look at the first letter, which is 'A'. In French, we say this as 'Ah'.
- Look at the second letter, which is 'M'. In French, this sounds just like the English letter 'M', pronounced as 'Ehm'.
- Look at the last letter, which is 'I'. In French, this letter sounds like the English word 'bee' but without the 'b'. It is pronounced as 'Ee'.
- Put the letter sounds together to spell the word out loud: 'Ah' - 'Ehm' - 'Ee'!
