Colors (Les couleurs)

Grade 5 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! Today, we will explore the wonderful world of colors in French. It is going to be so much fun!

In French, we call colors 'les couleurs'. Just like in English, colors help us describe the world around us. Let's learn three basic colors first: red, blue, and yellow.

In French, red is 'rouge', blue is 'bleu', and yellow is 'jaune'. Notice how 'bleu' looks very similar to the English word blue!

To describe an object, we put the color word after the noun. For example, 'un ballon rouge' means a red balloon. This is the opposite of how we do it in English!

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you have a yellow banana and a blue book. How would you write these two items in French? Let's figure it out step-by-step!

  1. Step 1: Find the French words for the objects. A banana is 'une banane' and a book is 'un livre'.
  2. Step 2: Find the French words for the colors. Yellow is 'jaune' and blue is 'bleu'.
  3. Step 3: Remember the rule! In French, the color word must go after the object word.
  4. Step 4: Combine them. 'A yellow banana' becomes 'une banane jaune'.
  5. Step 5: Combine the second pair. 'A blue book' becomes 'un livre bleu'. You did it!
