In French, every food word has a partner word. We use 'le' for masculine foods and 'la' for feminine foods.

Let's look at an apple. In French, an apple is 'la pomme'. It is a feminine word, so we use 'la' before it.

Now let's look at cake! Cake is masculine. We say 'le gâteau'. The little hat on the 'a' is called a circumflex.

✏️ Worked example

How do we write 'the cheese' in French? The French word for cheese is 'fromage' (masculine).

First, find the French word for cheese. The problem tells us it is 'fromage'.
Next, check if the word is masculine or feminine. The problem says it is masculine.
Then, pick the correct partner word. We use 'le' for masculine words.
Finally, put them together. 'Le' plus 'fromage' makes 'le fromage'!
