Greetings & introductions (Salutations)

Grade 5 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! Today we will learn how to say hello and introduce ourselves in French.

In French, we say 'Bonjour' to say hello. It literally means 'good day.' You can use it with friends, teachers, or anyone you meet during the day!

To tell someone your name, you say 'Je m'appelle' followed by your name. For example, 'Je m'appelle Leo' means 'My name is Leo.' It is like saying 'I call myself.'

Je m'appelle... My name is...

When you meet someone new, it is polite to say 'Enchanté' which means 'Nice to meet you.' It is a warm way to make a new friend feel welcome!

Enchanté !
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you meet a new classmate named Thomas. Let's see how you would say hello, introduce yourself, and welcome him in French step by step.

  1. First, greet Thomas by saying hello. You say: 'Bonjour !'
  2. Next, introduce yourself. If your name is Alex, you say: 'Je m'appelle Alex.'
  3. Finally, tell Thomas it is nice to meet him. You say: 'Enchanté !'
  4. Put it all together in one friendly sentence: 'Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Alex. Enchanté !'
