Bonjour! Today we are going to learn how to name parts of the body in French. It is as easy as head, shoulders, knees, and toes!
In French, we use different words for our body parts. Just like in English, we can point to our head, hand, or foot and say their special French names.
Let us start at the very top! The French word for 'head' is 'la tête'. It sounds like 'lah tet'.
Next, let us look at our hands and feet. A hand is 'la main' (sounds like 'lah mahn'). A foot is 'le pied' (sounds like 'luh pyay').
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are playing a game of 'Simon Says' in French. The leader says: 'Touchez la tête et le pied!' What two body parts do you need to touch?
- First, look at the first body part word in the sentence: 'la tête'.
- Recall that 'la tête' is at the very top of your body. It means 'the head'.
- Next, look at the second body part word: 'le pied'.
- Recall that 'le pied' is what you use to kick a soccer ball. It means 'the foot'.
- Put it all together! You should touch your head and your foot at the same time.
