Telling time & weather

Grade 5 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! Today we will learn how to talk about the time and the weather in French. It is super easy and fun!

To ask what time it is in French, we say: 'Quelle heure est-il?' To answer, we start with 'Il est...' followed by the hour and the word 'heure'.

Let us look at an example. If it is one o'clock, we say: 'Il est une heure.' If it is two o'clock, we say: 'Il est deux heures.' Notice how we add an 's' to 'heures' when there is more than one hour!

Il est une heure! (1:00)

Now let us talk about the weather! To ask what the weather is like, we say: 'Quel temps fait-il?' To say it is sunny, we say: 'Il fait beau.' To say it is raining, we say: 'Il pleut.'

✏️ Worked example

Imagine it is 3:00 PM and a warm, sunny day in Paris. How would you tell a friend the time and the weather in French?

  1. First, let us find the French word for the number 3. The French word for three is 'trois'.
  2. Next, put the time sentence together. Start with 'Il est', add your number 'trois', and then add 'heures'. This gives us: 'Il est trois heures.'
  3. Now, let us find the phrase for sunny weather. The French phrase for 'it is beautiful weather' is 'Il fait beau.'
  4. Finally, combine both ideas to answer your friend! You can say: 'Il est trois heures, et il fait beau!'
