In French, every food and drink has a gender. They are either masculine or feminine. We use 'le' for masculine items and 'la' for feminine items.
Let us look at a masculine word: 'le pain' (the bread). We use 'le' because bread is masculine in French.
Now let us look at a feminine word: 'la pomme' (the apple). We use 'la' because an apple is feminine in French.
We also have 'l'' which we use when a word starts with a vowel, like 'l'eau' (the water). This makes it easier and smoother to say!
✏️ Worked example
How do you decide if you should use 'le', 'la', or 'l'' for the French word for water, which is 'eau'?
- Look at the first letter of the French word. The word is 'eau'.
- Identify if the first letter is a vowel. The letter 'e' is indeed a vowel.
- Apply the grammar rule: when a noun starts with a vowel, we always use 'l'' instead of 'le' or 'la'.
- Combine them together to get 'l'eau', which means 'the water'.
