Bonjour! Today we will learn the French words for parts of the body. It is as easy as head, shoulders, knees, and toes!
In French, we use different words for our body parts. Just like in English, we use 'the' or 'my' before the word. In French, we use 'le' for masculine words and 'la' for feminine words. For example, the head is 'la tête'.
Let us look at the face! The nose is 'le nez' and the mouth is 'la bouche'. Notice how 'le nez' uses 'le' because it is masculine, while 'la bouche' uses 'la' because it is feminine. Let us watch them light up!
Now let us look at the arm, which is 'le bras'. The hand at the end of your arm is 'la main'. Your arm helps you reach, and your hand helps you wave hello!
Imagine you want to describe a soccer player kicking a ball. You need to say they use their leg (la jambe) and their foot (le pied). How do we group and remember these two words by their gender?
- First, look at the word for leg: 'la jambe'. The word 'la' tells us that 'jambe' is a feminine noun.
- Next, look at the word for foot: 'le pied'. The word 'le' tells us that 'pied' is a masculine noun.
- Now, compare them. Even though they are both parts of the lower body, one is feminine ('la jambe') and one is masculine ('le pied').
- Finally, practice linking them together. You kick with your foot ('le pied') which is at the bottom of your leg ('la jambe')!
