Bonjour! Today we will learn how to talk about yourself and others in French using pronouns and two super important verbs.
In French, subject pronouns are the words we use to show who is doing the action. For example, 'je' means 'I', 'tu' means 'you', and 'il' or 'elle' mean 'he' or 'she'.
The verb 'être' means 'to be'. We use it to talk about who we are or how we feel, like saying 'Je suis' for 'I am'.
The verb 'avoir' means 'to have'. We use it to talk about things we own or even our age, like saying 'J'ai' for 'I have'.
✏️ Worked example
Translate the English sentence 'She is happy' into French using your new subject pronouns and verbs.
- Find the English subject pronoun, which is 'She'.
- Translate 'She' into French. The French word for 'she' is 'elle'.
- Identify the verb 'is', which comes from 'to be' (être).
- Find the correct form of 'être' that goes with 'elle'. That form is 'est'.
- Combine them to get 'Elle est' (She is) and finish the sentence with the word for happy: 'Elle est heureuse'.
