Greetings & introductions (Salutations)

Grade 7 · French · Free lesson

Bonjour! Let's learn how to greet people and introduce ourselves in French. It is super easy and fun!

In French, how you greet someone depends on who you are talking to. You can use friendly words for your pals, or polite words for adults.

businessman

Use 'Salut' for a quick, friendly 'Hi!' with your friends. Use 'Bonjour' as a polite 'Hello' for teachers, parents, or people you just met.

Salut! Friendly (Friends) Bonjour! Polite (Adults)

To share your name, say 'Je m'appelle' followed by your name. This literally means 'I call myself' in French.

Je m'appelle... Leo! "My name is Leo!"
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are meeting your new French teacher, Madame Dupont. How do you greet her politely and tell her your name is Alex?

  1. First, look at who you are talking to. Madame Dupont is a teacher, so you must use a polite greeting.
  2. Pick 'Bonjour' instead of 'Salut' because 'Bonjour' is the correct polite greeting for adults.
  3. Next, prepare to say your name. Use the phrase 'Je m'appelle' which means 'I call myself'.
  4. Add your name, 'Alex', to the end of the phrase to get 'Je m'appelle Alex'.
  5. Put it all together! Say: 'Bonjour! Je m'appelle Alex.'
