Bonjour! Today we will learn how to talk about everyday actions in French using regular -er verbs.
In French, many action words end in -er. These are called regular -er verbs, like 'parler' which means 'to speak'.
To use these verbs, we first chop off the -er ending. This leaves us with the starting part, called the stem.
Next, we add a new ending to the stem. The ending changes depending on who is doing the action.
✏️ Worked example
Change the French verb 'jouer' (to play) to match the subject 'Je' (I) in the present tense.
- Find the verb we want to change: 'jouer'.
- Remove the '-er' ending from the verb. This leaves you with the stem: 'jou-'.
- Identify the subject pronoun, which is 'Je' (I).
- Look up the matching ending for 'Je'. The rule says we add '-e'.
- Attach the '-e' ending to our stem 'jou-'. This gives us 'joue'.
- Combine them to make your final sentence: 'Je joue' (I play).
