Welcome! Today we will learn how to talk about yourself and others in French using the super-handy word 'être'!
In English, we use words like 'I', 'you', and 'she' to show who is doing an action. These are called subject pronouns. In French, we do the same thing, but the words look and sound a bit different!
Let us look at 'Je' (I) and 'Tu' (you). We use 'Je' to talk about ourselves and 'Tu' for a friend. Watch how 'Je' and 'Tu' point to different people!
The verb 'être' means 'to be'. When we pair it with our pronouns, the verb changes its shape. We say 'Je suis' (I am) and 'Tu es' (You are). This is called conjugating!
Imagine you want to introduce yourself to a new French pen pal. You want to write: 'I am happy.' How do you build this sentence in French step by step?
- Identify the subject pronoun. Here, the subject is 'I'. In French, 'I' is 'Je'.
- Find the correct form of the verb 'to be' (être) that goes with 'Je'. The matching form for 'Je' is 'suis'.
- Combine them to make the starting phrase: 'Je suis' (I am).
- Add the French word for happy, which is 'content'. Your final sentence is: 'Je suis content!'
