Bonjour! Today we will learn how to talk about the daily weather and tell time in French. It is super easy and fun!
To ask about the weather in French, we say: 'Quel temps fait-il?' We answer with 'Il fait' followed by the weather. For example, 'Il fait beau' means it is beautiful weather.
Let us look at two common types of weather. 'Il fait chaud' means it is hot, and 'Il fait du soleil' means it is sunny. We use 'Il fait' for most weather expressions.
To ask for the time, we say: 'Quelle heure est-il?' We answer with 'Il est' followed by the hour and the word 'heure'. For example, 'Il est trois heures' means it is three o'clock.
Imagine your French pen pal asks you what the weather is like and what time you eat lunch. How would you write: 'It is sunny. It is twelve o'clock (noon)' in French?
- Step 1: Look at the weather phrase. 'Sunny' in French uses 'du soleil' with our weather starter 'Il fait'. So we write: 'Il fait du soleil.'
- Step 2: Look at the time phrase. 'Twelve o'clock (noon)' has a special word in French. It is 'midi'.
- Step 3: Combine 'midi' with our time starter 'Il est'. We get: 'Il est midi.' (Note: We do not add the word 'heures' after 'midi'!)
- Step 4: Put both sentences together to answer your pen pal: 'Il fait du soleil. Il est midi.'
