Bonjour! Today we are going to learn how to talk about your plans in French using a super easy formula.
In English, we often say we are 'going to' do something. French does the exact same thing! We call this the 'near future' or 'le futur proche'.
To build this, you need two parts. First, grab the verb 'aller' (to go) and change it to match your subject. Second, add the action verb in its original form, which we call the infinitive.
Let us look at how 'aller' changes. For 'Je' (I), we use 'vais'. For 'Tu' (you), we use 'vas'. For 'Il/Elle' (he/she), we use 'va'. Try to spot this pattern in action!
✏️ Worked example
Translate the English sentence 'She is going to speak' into French using the near future tense.
- Identify the subject in the English sentence. 'She' translates to 'Elle' in French.
- Find the correct form of the verb 'aller' for 'Elle'. Looking at our rules, 'Elle' pairs with 'va'.
- Find the French infinitive verb for 'to speak'. The verb is 'parler'.
- Put the two pieces together right after the subject: Subject (Elle) + Aller (va) + Infinitive (parler).
- Combine them to get the final correct sentence: 'Elle va parler'.
