To ask what the weather is like, French speakers say: 'Quel temps fait-il?' We answer using 'Il fait' followed by the weather word, like 'Il fait beau' for beautiful weather.
When the sun shines, we say 'Il fait du soleil'. Let's compare this to when it rains, which is 'Il pleut'. Notice how 'Il pleut' uses a direct action verb instead of 'Il fait'!
To ask for the time, we say 'Quelle heure est-il?'. We start our answer with 'Il est...' followed by the number and the word 'heure' (hour). For example, 'Il est trois heures' means it is three o'clock.
Imagine it is 4:00 PM and pouring rain outside. How would you describe the time and weather to a friend in French?
- Step 1: Identify the weather. It is raining, which we know is 'Il pleut'.
- Step 2: Identify the hour. The number 4 in French is 'quatre'.
- Step 3: Build the time sentence. Start with 'Il est', add the number 'quatre', and finish with 'heures'. This gives us: 'Il est quatre heures.'
- Step 4: Combine both ideas naturally. You can say: 'Il est quatre heures et il pleut.' (It is four o'clock and it is raining.)
