In American Sign Language, we use our hands to paint pictures in the air. When we want to describe something, we usually sign the noun first. Then, we sign the color.
Let us learn the sign for BLUE. You make a 'B' handshape with your fingers straight up. Then, you gently twist your wrist back and forth.
In English, we say 'blue car.' But in ASL, we sign CAR first, and then we sign BLUE. It is like saying 'car, the blue one!'
✏️ Worked example
How do you tell a friend that you have a yellow book using ASL rules?
First, look at the two ideas you have: 'yellow' and 'book'.
Next, remember the ASL rule. We sign the naming word, or noun, before the color.
Find the noun. In this example, the noun is 'book'.
Find the color word. The color word is 'yellow'.
Put them in the correct ASL order. Sign 'BOOK' first, and then sign 'YELLOW'.
