Hi there! I am Studyfin, your ASL tutor. Today we will learn how to sign colors and describe things!
In American Sign Language, we use our hands and faces to describe the world. To show a color, we make a specific hand shape and move it near our face or body.
In English, we say 'the blue shirt' with the color first. But in ASL, we usually sign the noun first, like 'shirt', and then sign the color 'blue'!
To sign the color blue, make the ASL letter 'B' with your hand. Then, twist your wrist back and forth a couple of times. It is like a little wave!
✏️ Worked example
How would you describe a yellow car to a friend using ASL rules?
- First, identify the noun. The noun is the object, which is the 'car'.
- Second, identify the color. The color is 'yellow'.
- Third, put them in ASL order. The noun comes first, then the color. So, you will sign 'car' first.
- Fourth, sign 'yellow' right after. To sign yellow, make a 'Y' hand shape and twist your wrist!
- Now you have successfully signed 'car yellow'!
