Feelings & emotions

Grade 4 · American Sign Language · Free lesson

Hi! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let's learn how to show our feelings and stay calm using American Sign Language!

First, we must identify our own feelings. In American Sign Language (ASL), your face shows your emotions. To sign HAPPY, you place your flat hand near your chest and move it in outward circles with a big smile.

Next, we can describe and practice calming strategies. When we feel angry or overwhelmed, we can use the sign for DEEP-BREATH. Moving our hands up and down near our chest reminds us to take slow, calming breaths.

Calming Sign: DEEP-BREATH

Self-management helps us control our actions. When we feel mad, we can stop, sign CALM, and let our feelings settle down. To sign CALM, push your flat hands gently down through the air like smoothing out water.

Self-Management: CALM DOWN
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you feel very angry because a game did not go your way. Walk through how to identify your feeling, choose a calming strategy, and practice self-management.

  1. Step 1: Notice your body. Your chest feels tight, your hands are clenched, and your face is frowning. You identify this feeling as ANGRY.
  2. Step 2: Choose a self-management strategy to help you feel better. You decide to use the DEEP-BREATH sign.
  3. Step 3: Practice the strategy. Place your hands flat on your chest. Move them up and down slowly as you breathe in and out.
  4. Step 4: Use the CALM sign to signal to your brain and others that you are ready to be peaceful and try again.
