Hi there! I am Studyfin, your ASL tutor. Today we will learn how to sign the numbers 1 through 5!
In American Sign Language, we use our dominant hand to sign numbers. Your palm faces toward you for numbers 1 through 5. This is different from how most people show numbers with their fingers!
To sign the number 1, hold up your index finger with your palm facing in. To sign the number 2, hold up your index and middle fingers. Your palm still faces you.
The sign for 3 is very special. Instead of your ring finger, you use your thumb! Hold up your thumb, index finger, and middle finger to sign 3.
For 4, tuck your thumb in and hold up four fingers. For 5, open your whole hand wide. Remember to keep your palm facing in toward your chest!
Imagine your friend asks you how many apples are on the table. There are 3 apples. Let us practice how you would sign the number 3 to your friend step by step.
- First, raise your dominant hand up so your friend can see it clearly.
- Turn your hand so your palm is facing in, looking directly at you.
- Fold down your ring finger and your pinky finger into your palm.
- Hold up your index finger and your middle finger straight.
- Stick your thumb out to the side to complete the sign for 3.
- Hold the sign still for a moment so your friend can count your three fingers!
