Deaf culture is the unique way of life shared by Deaf people. They use American Sign Language, or ASL, to talk. They also share a rich history, beautiful art, and special values.
For Deaf people, eye contact is very important. Since they use their hands and faces to speak, looking at each other shows they are listening. Turning away is like closing your ears!
Instead of clapping with their hands together, the Deaf community waves their hands in the air. This is a visual way to show joy and cheer for someone!
Imagine you want to get the attention of a Deaf friend who is looking away. How can you do this politely using Deaf culture rules?
- First, remember that shouting will not work because your friend cannot hear you.
- Second, walk to a spot where your friend can easily see you.
- Third, gently wave your hand in their line of sight to get their attention.
- Fourth, if you are close, you can gently tap them on the shoulder once or twice.
- Finally, smile and make eye contact once they turn to look at you!
