In American Sign Language (ASL), your face does a lot of the talking. When you ask a question, your eyebrows must move to show what kind of question it is.
For questions that can be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no', you raise your eyebrows up. You also tilt your head forward a little bit.
For 'Wh-' questions like Who, What, Where, or Why, you do the opposite. You furrow, or squeeze, your eyebrows down and tilt your head.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you want to ask your friend two questions in ASL: 'Do you like apples?' and 'Where is the school?' How do you show these with your face?
First, look at the first question: 'Do you like apples?'
Decide if it is a Yes/No question or a Wh- question. Since the answer is 'yes' or 'no', it is a Yes/No question.
For the first question, raise your eyebrows up high and tilt your head forward as you sign.
Next, look at the second question: 'Where is the school?'
Decide if it is a Yes/No question or a Wh- question. Since it uses the word 'Where', it is a Wh- question.
For the second question, squeeze your eyebrows down together as you sign.
