Hi there! Today we are going to explore Deaf culture and see how the Deaf community connects.
Deaf culture is the unique way of life shared by Deaf people. They use American Sign Language, or ASL, to speak with their hands and faces.
In Deaf culture, getting someone's attention is different. Instead of calling out a name, people might gently wave their hand or tap a shoulder.
Deaf people also use visual tools in their homes. For example, when someone rings the doorbell, a light flashes instead of a loud bell ringing.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you want to tell your Deaf friend, Sam, that lunch is ready. Sam is looking away from you. How do you get Sam's attention politely?
- Think about how you usually get attention. You might shout, but Sam cannot hear you.
- Recall what you learned about Deaf culture. Visual and touch connections are very helpful.
- Walk over to Sam so you are in their line of sight.
- Gently wave your hand near them, or lightly tap them on the shoulder.
- Once Sam looks at you, use sign language or gestures to show that it is time to eat!
