American Sign Language, or ASL, is a beautiful visual language. People use their hands, faces, and bodies to share ideas instead of speaking.
To sign 'Hello', you bring your hand up to your forehead. Then, you move it slightly out and down, just like a friendly salute.
To sign 'Thank you', you touch your fingertips to your chin. Then, you move your flat hand forward and down toward the other person.
✏️ Worked example
Let us practice using these two signs in a real conversation! Imagine you meet a new friend named Sam. Show how you would greet them and thank them for sharing a toy.
First, look at Sam and smile to show you are ready to communicate.
Next, raise your hand to your forehead and wave it out to sign 'Hello'.
Then, after Sam shares a toy, touch your fingertips to your chin.
Finally, move your hand forward and down toward Sam to sign 'Thank you'.
