Welcome! Today, we will learn how to show feelings and stay calm using ASL.

First, we must identify how we feel inside. You might feel happy, sad, or angry today. In ASL, your face helps show your true feeling.

To sign HAPPY, circle your flat hands up your chest with a smile. Facial expressions show the tone of your feeling.

Sign: HAPPY (Smile + Upward Motion)

When you feel mad, practice a calming strategy. Take a deep breath to help manage big emotions. Slow breathing cools down strong feelings.

Maya feels upset because her tower fell. How can she identify her feeling and calm down?

  1. Step 1: Maya notices her face is frowning and her heart feels fast.
  2. Step 2: She names her emotion: 'I am feeling frustrated.'
  3. Step 3: Maya uses a calming strategy. She signs CALM and takes three deep breaths.
  4. Step 4: Now her body feels relaxed and ready to try again.
