Welcome to American Sign Language! Today, we will learn how to say hello and introduce ourselves.
In American Sign Language, or ASL, we use hand shapes and movements to talk. Saying hello is simple and friendly.

To sign HELLO, place your hand near your forehead with your palm facing out. Then, move your hand outward like a polite salute.
To ask WHAT IS YOUR NAME, you point to the person, sign NAME by tapping your fingers, and lower your eyebrows to show a question.
✏️ Worked example
Show how to greet a new friend named Sam using ASL order.
- First, wave or sign HELLO by moving your open hand from your forehead outward.
- Next, sign MY NAME by touching your chest and then tapping two fingers together twice.
- Finally, fingerspell the name S-A-M using hand shapes for each letter.
- Put it together: HELLO, MY NAME S-A-M!
