Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will learn how to sign the numbers 1 through 5 in American Sign Language!
In American Sign Language, or ASL, we use our hands to speak. Signing numbers is super fun and easy to learn!
When you sign the numbers 1 to 5, your palm should face in toward your body. This is different from how we usually show numbers with our hands!
To sign 1, 2, and 3, we use our fingers in a special order. For 3, you must pop out your thumb instead of your ring finger!
For 4 and 5, you bring all your fingers up. For 4, tuck your thumb in. For 5, let your thumb fly free!
✏️ Worked example
Let us practice signing the number 3 step by step. Try to do this with your own dominant hand!
- Hold your hand up in front of your chest.
- Turn your hand so your palm faces in toward your body.
- Fold down your ring finger and your pinky finger into your palm.
- Hold your index finger and your middle finger straight up.
- Extend your thumb out to the side. Look at your hand. You are signing the number 3 in ASL!
