Hi there! I am Studyfin, your ASL tutor. Today we will learn how to sign some simple everyday words!
American Sign Language, or ASL, is a beautiful language. It uses hand shapes, movement, and facial expressions to share ideas instead of spoken words.
To sign 'yes', you make a fist with your hand. Then, you tilt your wrist up and down, just like a head nodding up and down to say yes.
To sign 'no', you quickly snap your index and middle fingers down to meet your thumb. It looks like a mouth snapping shut to say 'no'.
✏️ Worked example
Let's practice using these signs in a real conversation! Imagine you want to answer 'yes' to a friend who asks if you are ready to study.
- First, raise your dominant hand to about shoulder height.
- Next, make a loose fist with your fingers curled in and your thumb resting on the side.
- Then, tilt your hand forward from your wrist, bending it downward.
- Finally, pull your hand back up to the starting position. Repeat this nodding motion twice to clearly say 'yes'!
