Feelings & emotions

Grade 6 · American Sign Language · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your ASL tutor. Today we will learn how to show our feelings and practice a calming strategy using American Sign Language!

In American Sign Language (ASL), we use our face and hands to show our feelings. First, we must identify how we feel. When we feel mad, our eyebrows squeeze together, and our hands make strong shapes.

When we feel angry or overwhelmed, we need a self-management strategy to help us calm down. One great way is to take a slow, deep breath to relax our mind and body.

Breathe In... Breathe Out...

We can also sign 'CALM' to help us focus. To sign 'CALM', place both flat hands near your head, then gently push them down to show peace spreading through your body.

✏️ Worked example

Let's practice the thinking skill of identifying an emotion and choosing a self-management strategy to feel better.

  1. Step 1: Notice your body signals. Your heart is beating fast and your hands are clenched. This means you feel ANGRY.
  2. Step 2: Sign 'ANGRY' by clawing your hand near your face to show the feeling and let it out safely.
  3. Step 3: Choose a calming strategy. Decide to use the 'CALM' sign and deep breathing.
  4. Step 4: Take a deep breath in, and gently push your hands down to sign 'CALM' as you breathe out.
  5. Step 5: Check in with yourself. Your heart is beating slower now, and your body feels relaxed!
