Hi there! Today we are going to learn how to sign the numbers 1 through 5 in American Sign Language. It is super easy and fun!
In American Sign Language, we use one hand to sign the numbers 1 through 5. But there is a special trick you need to know first!

When you sign 1 through 5, your palm must face inward, toward your chest. If your palm faces out, it means something else!
Let us look at the number 3. Instead of using your pointer, middle, and ring fingers, ASL uses your thumb, pointer, and middle finger!
✏️ Worked example
Try signing the number 3 yourself by following these steps.
- Hold your dominant hand up in front of your chest.
- Turn your hand so your palm is facing your body.
- Make a fist, then stick out your index finger and your middle finger.
- Now, extend your thumb out to the side.
- Look at your hand! You are successfully signing the number 3 in ASL!
