American Sign Language, or ASL, is a beautiful visual language. It uses hand shapes, movement, and facial expressions to share ideas instead of spoken words.
To sign 'Thank You', you start with your dominant hand near your lips. Then, you move your flat hand forward and down toward the person you are speaking to.
Now, let's analyze how we sign 'Please'. You place your flat dominant hand on the center of your chest. Then, you rub it in a circle a few times.
Imagine you want to tell a deaf classmate 'Please' and 'Thank you' after they share a pencil. How do you decide which sign to use first, and how do you do them step by step?
- First, analyze the situation. You want to say 'Please' when asking for the pencil, or 'Thank you' after you receive it.
- To sign 'Please' first: Place your flat dominant hand on your chest.
- Move your hand in a circular motion clockwise on your chest a few times while smiling.
- Next, once you receive the pencil, switch to 'Thank you'.
- Place the fingertips of your flat hand near your lips.
- Move your hand down and forward toward your classmate to show your gratitude.
