Hi there! I am Studyfin, your ASL tutor. Today, we will learn how to say hello and introduce ourselves in American Sign Language!
American Sign Language, or ASL, is a beautiful visual language used by Deaf communities. To start any conversation, we need a friendly greeting like 'Hello!'
To sign 'Hello', you make a flat hand and place your fingertips near your forehead. Then, you move your hand slightly out and down, like a polite salute.
Next, we share our name. In ASL, we sign 'My', then 'Name', and then we fingerspell our letters. The sign for 'Name' uses two 'H' hands crossing over each other twice.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you meet a new friend named Sam. How would you greet them and introduce yourself step by step using ASL?
Step 1: Get their attention. Wave friendly or wait until they look at you.
Step 2: Sign 'Hello' by bringing your flat hand to your forehead and moving it out.
Step 3: Sign 'My' by pressing your flat open palm against your chest.
Step 4: Sign 'Name' by crossing the index and middle fingers of both hands and tapping them together twice.
Step 5: Fingerspell your own name letter by letter using the ASL manual alphabet.
